The meaning of puberty for elementary school students and the role of information sources: a preliminary studyBackground: Many children enter puberty without adequate knowledge and preparedness to cope with the physical and psychological changes that occur during this developmental stage. Method: Using a descriptive qualitative design, this study involved six students aged 10-12 and one classroom teacher selected through a sampling process in elementary schools in Tangerang district. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews, observational field notes, and documentation, followed by systematic content analysis. Source triangulation was used to strengthen the validity of the data. Results: Participants largely interpreted puberty through observable physical indicators, such as menstruation, breast development, deepening of the voice, and the appearance of body hair, while the psychological and social dimensions were minimally understood. Parents—especially mothers—served as a primary but limited source of information, while formal education was limited to sixth grade. Students frequently relied on digital platforms, particularly social media, increasing their vulnerability to misinformation. Conclusion: Strengthening early, structured, and developmentally appropriate puberty education—supported by increased parental involvement and credible digital literacy—is crucial for improving student readiness and promoting healthier developmental trajectories.
